A major scandal has shaken the law enforcement administration in Bangladesh after Detective Branch (DB) police raided a luxury residence in the capital's Bhatara area, detaining 85 individuals, including 26 women, from an illicit drug-fueled DJ party. The residence belongs to Additional DIG Abdullah Al Zahir. In the wake of the high-profile raid, the senior police official has been immediately withdrawn from his field responsibilities and attached to the police headquarters pending further investigation.
According to intelligence sources, the clandestine gathering featured heavy consumption of banned narcotics and loud music, prompting a sudden crackdown by a special team of detectives. Despite attempts by some attendees to evade law enforcement, officers successfully secured the premises and apprehended 85 people on the spot. A substantial quantity of foreign liquor, yaba tablets, and other contraband substances were recovered from the scene during the exhaustive search operations.
The involvement of a high-ranking police official's residence in such unlawful activities has drawn widespread criticism and raised serious concerns regarding professional ethics within the law enforcement apparatus. Analysts note that such incidents severely dent the public's trust in institutions mandated to uphold the rule of law. Swift administrative action followed the raid, resulting in the immediate reassignment of the accused DIG to the central headquarters.
Legal procedures, including the filing of formal cases under the Narcotics Control Act, are currently underway against all detained individuals. Investigators are probing deeper into the syndicate to identify any other accomplices or regular attendees who managed to escape before the raid. The Detective Branch reiterated its commitment to zero tolerance against narcotics, emphasizing that lawbreakers within the force will face uncompromised accountability.
Civil society members and observers have expressed deep concern over the incident, demanding a transparent and rigorous departmental inquiry. They stress that strict punitive measures are imperative to deter misconduct among top-tier officials and to restore institutional integrity. The police headquarters has confirmed that an inquiry committee is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the event, and appropriate departmental actions will follow based on the findings.
