An indefinite road blockade has been declared once again in the remote hilly tourist hub of Sajek, located in Rangamati district. This stringent agitation has been announced by locals pressing for their long-standing demands, including enhanced regional security and the implementation of previously agreed-upon measures. The announcement has sparked fresh concerns among local authorities, business owners, and tourism stakeholders who rely heavily on uninterrupted communication in the region.
Sajek, situated under Baghaichhari upazila of Rangamati, is one of Bangladesh's premier tourist destinations, widely celebrated for its scenic beauty and breathtaking sea of clouds. Thousands of travelers visit the valley every year. However, socio-political complexities and security concerns in the Chittagong Hill Tracts have frequently led to disruptions, blockades, and temporary halts in tourism, severely impacting the local livelihood and economy.
Following the latest blockade call, vehicular movement on the primary Dighinala-Sajek route faces complete suspension. Tourists currently visiting the valley risk being stranded, while upcoming travelers are forced to cancel their itineraries. Analysts note that despite occasional dialogues between local representatives and administrative bodies, the lack of a permanent, sustainable resolution to regional grievances continues to trigger recurring protests and economic uncertainty.
Local businesses, including resort owners, transport operators, and restaurant workers, are bracing for substantial financial losses due to the ongoing turmoil. Since Sajek's economy is inextricably tied to the hospitality sector, prolonged or frequent blockades threaten to cause lasting damage to the region's burgeoning tourism industry. Daily commuting for ordinary residents has also been thrown into disarray.
In response to the escalating situation, law enforcement agencies have stepped up security patrols across vulnerable points in and around Sajek to maintain public order and prevent violence. Administrative officials are reportedly attempting to engage with community leaders to negotiate a peaceful end to the deadlock. Nevertheless, with organizers standing firm on their demands, the immediate resolution remains uncertain, keeping the region on edge.
