A distressing incident unfolded in Fatikchhari, Chittagong, as a newborn baby girl was discovered abandoned in a roadside thicket. The infant was found on Thursday evening near the Amtoli area of North Paindong, located along the Chittagong-Khagrachhari regional highway. Local residents, alerted by the sound of the baby crying, acted swiftly to rescue the child from the bushes before notifying the authorities.
According to local witnesses, the cries were heard around 7:30 PM. Mohammad Raja, a local resident who participated in the rescue, described how they followed the sound into the dense vegetation, where they were shocked to find the abandoned newborn. The discovery quickly drew a crowd, and police were summoned to the scene immediately to ensure the safety and medical care of the infant.
Following the rescue, the baby was transported to the Fatikchhari Upazila Health Complex. She is currently under the dedicated care of a nurse at the facility. Medical staff have reported that the infant is in stable condition, though the circumstances of her abandonment in such a vulnerable state have sparked widespread public outrage and concern within the community.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Fatikchhari Police Station, Rabiul Alam Khan, confirmed that the baby is currently under police protection. He stated that the department is conducting a thorough investigation to identify those responsible for leaving the child on the highway. Authorities are currently reviewing potential leads and questioning local residents to piece together the events leading up to the abandonment.
As of Friday afternoon, the identity of the child and the motives behind the abandonment remain unknown. The police have assured that appropriate legal action will be taken once the investigation progresses. Efforts are ongoing to ensure the child's continued health and to determine her future placement or potential reunification with family, should they be identified.
