In a tragic incident in Gazipur's Kaliganj upazila, a police sub-inspector and a local political leader were killed when a speeding covered van rammed into them early Friday morning. The fatal accident occurred in front of the Kaliganj Government Shramik College under Tumulia union as the law enforcers were returning to the police station following a successful anti-narcotics drive.

The deceased police officer has been identified as Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman, 30, stationed at the Kaliganj police station. The other victim is Rafiq Molla, 45, the organizational secretary of the Tumulia union unit of the BNP. Two others—Sub-Inspector Jabed Omar, 28, and driver Rabbi, 28—sustained severe injuries and were rushed to Dhaka for advanced medical treatment. According to local and police sources, the incident unfolded around 2:45 AM when a police team led by SI Mizanur raided the Tumulia bazar area and detained a local drug suspect named Ahid Mia.

After apprehending the suspect, the police vehicle briefly stopped in front of the Kaliganj Government Shramik College. SI Mizanur, SI Jabed, and driver Rabbi were standing by the roadside conversing with local BNP leader Rafiq Molla. At that critical moment, a speeding covered van heading towards Ghorashal plowed into the group before fleeing the scene. The impact left all four individuals critically injured on the pavement.

Other police personnel stationed nearby immediately rushed to the scene and transported the injured to the Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex by 4:00 AM. The attending physicians declared Rafiq Molla dead upon arrival. SI Mizanur and SI Jabed, given their critical condition, were transferred to Dhaka for better medical care, where SI Mizanur subsequently succumbed to his injuries.

The unexpected tragedy has cast a pall of deep grief over the local community and the police department alike. Law enforcement agencies have launched an extensive manhunt to identify and apprehend the fleeing covered van and its driver, while investigative procedures into the accident continue.
