Saudi Arabia’s air defense systems successfully intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched by Houthi militants targeting the southwestern city of Khamis Mushayt early Monday. The incident marks another attempt by the Yemen-based group to strike civilian infrastructure within the Kingdom, though the missile was neutralized before it could reach its intended target.
Brig. Gen. Turki Al-Maliki, the official spokesman for the Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen, confirmed the interception via a statement on the social media platform X. He emphasized that such hostile acts by the Houthi militia represent a blatant violation of international humanitarian law and pose a direct threat to regional stability. The Coalition remains committed to taking all necessary operational measures to protect civilians and critical infrastructure from such threats.
Following the launch, the Saudi General Directorate of Civil Defense issued an emergency alert for the nearby city of Abha as a precautionary measure. The alert was intended to ensure the safety of residents while defense teams assessed the situation. Shortly thereafter, authorities declared that the threat had been successfully mitigated and that there were no reported casualties or significant damage, allowing life in the region to return to normal.
This latest attack is part of a recurring pattern of cross-border aggression by Houthi forces, who have frequently targeted Saudi cities with ballistic missiles and explosive-laden drones throughout the ongoing conflict in Yemen. Saudi Arabia has consistently maintained that these actions are supported by external actors seeking to destabilize the region. In response, the Kingdom has significantly bolstered its defensive capabilities, utilizing advanced radar and interceptor technologies to maintain a high success rate in neutralizing incoming threats.
As the situation remains tense, Saudi security forces continue to maintain a high state of readiness. The Kingdom has reiterated its resolve to defend its sovereignty and ensure the safety of its citizens against any further provocations, while continuing to support efforts aimed at achieving a sustainable political resolution to the conflict in Yemen.
