Batsmen often get reprieves on the cricket field in various ways, but what transpired recently was truly unusual. Despite having his stumps shattered, a batsman managed to stay at the crease—all because of a stray towel. A bizarre incident of this nature unfolded during the ODI match between Afghanistan and Zimbabwe.
Azmatullah Omarzai clean-bowled Zimbabwe's Brian Bennett, but instead of walking back to the pavilion, the batsman received a miraculous lifeline. The reason? Omarzai's towel had slipped and fallen to the ground right before he delivered the ball.
The incident took place during the eighth over of the Zimbabwe innings. Omarzai was operating with the ball, and his delivery crashed directly into Bennett's stumps, immediately triggering celebrations among the Afghan bowlers and fielders.
However, Bennett claimed that the sight of Omarzai's falling towel just moments before playing his shot had severely distracted him. Non-striker and Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza also promptly brought the matter to the attention of the on-field umpires.
After conferring with leg-umpire Farooq Khan, umpire Ahsan Raza reached a decisive conclusion—calling it a dead ball. Consequently, despite being clean-bowled, Bennett was reprieved and remained not out.
What does the law say? According to Clause 20.4.2.6 of the ICC Men's ODI Playing Conditions, an umpire shall call and signal 'Dead Ball' if the striker is distracted by any noise, movement, or any other factor while preparing to receive or actually receiving a delivery.
