Mention Kader Khan in the context of Hindi cinema, and cinephiles are instantly transported to his uproarious comedic scenes with Govinda, his deadpan yet hilarious dialogues, or his brilliantly penned dramatic scripts for Amitabh Bachchan films. Whether portraying a wealthy businessman, a stern father, a corrupt villain, or simply a presence that would send entire theaters into fits of laughter, Khan was a titan of the silver screen. Yet, the life of this universally recognized icon was far more arduous and dramatic than the characters he played.

Growing up in the impoverished slums of Mumbai's Kamathipura, Khan's family endured days where they went without food for three consecutive days a week. Overwhelmed by extreme scarcity, he once contemplated dropping out of school to work. However, driven by his mother's unwavering encouragement, he persevered, pursued higher education, and earned a degree in civil engineering. He even began his career as a professor at an engineering college. That very professor would eventually transform into one of Hindi cinema's most sought-after screenwriters and actors.

Today marks the birth anniversary of Kader Khan. Born in Kabul, Afghanistan, on this day in 1937, the legendary artist passed away on December 31, 2018, at the age of 81.

Kader Khan was born in Kabul to Abdul Rahman Khan, a deeply religious scholar, and Iqbal Begum, who hailed from the Balochistan region of present-day Pakistan. He migrated to India with his family during his early childhood.

His childhood, however, was far from easy. Growing up amidst parental separation, grinding poverty, and relentless domestic turmoil, Khan recalled in an interview that his family often had nothing to eat for three days a week. The crushing weight of poverty once made him feel that he should abandon his education and start working to support his family. Yet, his mother envisioned a vastly different future for him.
