In a dramatic turn of events, a young electrician attempted to rob a rural bank branch in Ishwarganj upazila of Mymensingh after failing to secure a personal loan of two hundred thousand BDT. The accused, identified as Kawsar Ahmed, hatched a bizarre and reckless plan to break into the bank's vault overnight, driven by frustration over his rejected loan application. However, his attempt was thwarted thanks to the vigilance of the on-duty security guard and the prompt response of local residents and patrolling law enforcement officers.
According to police and bank sources, Kawsar entered the Shohagi Bazar branch of Krishi Bank around 3:30 AM on Wednesday. Armed with a sharp knife, he overpowered the sleeping security guard, Mazharul Islam Sagar, and threatened him at knifepoint before tying him up with ropes. The intruder then made his way straight to the secure vault area and immediately began attempting to break open the heavy locks to access the cash reserves stored inside.
Despite his meticulous planning, the robbery attempt fell apart due to the guard's resilience and quick thinking. Although tied up, Mazharul managed to loosen the bindings around his hands and feet enough to free himself partially. He rushed downstairs and raised an alarm, shouting for help. Hearing his cries, night guards from the local market, patrolling police units, and nearby villagers rushed to the scene, quickly surrounding the bank premises and apprehending Kawsar red-handed.
Following the incident, local police arrived promptly, took the suspect into custody, and initiated a preliminary interrogation. During questioning, Kawsar confessed that he orchestrated the break-in out of sheer desperation and anger after being denied the loan. A formal criminal case was subsequently filed at the local police station by a bank official on Thursday morning. Authorities confirmed that legal procedures are underway to present the suspect before the court.
Bank branch manager Iqbal Hossain praised the security guard's presence of mind, which prevented any financial loss. He assured that no money was stolen and the main vault remained completely intact without any structural damage. The incident has drawn widespread attention locally, sparking discussions regarding rural financial institution security and the pressures surrounding small-scale loan applicants.
