In a major boost to the country's southern communication network and tourism sector, the much-anticipated Bhanga-Kuakata highway development project is set to be presented at the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) meeting on November 3. Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M. Rashiduzzaman Millat shared this encouraging update while interacting with journalists on the sidelines of a two-day 'Tourism Carnival' in the Kuakata tourist hub of Patuakhali. The minister expressed optimism that once the project is officially approved, the construction and modernization work will be wrapped up within a span of two to three years, unlocking enormous potential for Kuakata's tourism industry.
Highlighting the growing international interest in Bangladesh's tourism potential, the minister noted that foreign diplomats and investors have shown profound enthusiasm for investing in the country since the current administration took office. Among the top five or six prime investment destinations highlighted by foreign stakeholders, Cox's Bazar ranks first, closely followed by Kuakata, the Sundarbans, Sylhet, and Sajek. The government remains steadfast in providing comprehensive administrative support and facilitation to encourage both domestic and foreign investors to tap into these pristine locations.
Planning State Minister Zonaed Saki, addressing the discussion session, emphasized that the current administration is executing all development initiatives under well-defined master plans to minimize project delays and bureaucratic red tape. The government has formulated a comprehensive plan to redesign Kuakata with the direct involvement of international urban planners, transforming it into a global-standard tourist destination. This visionary approach aims to sustainably harness the natural beauty and resources of the coastal region.
The high-level discussion, chaired by Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation Chairman Md. Shamimuzzaman, also featured remarks from Patuakhali-4 (Kalapara-Rangabali) Member of Parliament A.B.M. Mosharraf Hossain, alongside local administration officials and tourism sector stakeholders. Speakers underscored the urgent need for modernized transport, enhanced tourist security, and expanded hospitality infrastructure. Once completed, the upgraded highway will drastically reduce travel time from Dhaka and other major business hubs, catalyzing exponential growth for local businesses, hotels, and service providers.
Industry experts observe that Kuakata's true tourism potential has long been hindered by inadequate road connectivity. Following the successful inauguration of the Padma Bridge, the southern region witnessed a massive surge in domestic travelers, and the upcoming Bhanga-Kuakata highway project will further cement seamless connectivity to the sea beach. This strategic infrastructural investment is poised to significantly accelerate the nation's service sector and bolster the overall coastal economy.
