In a startling midnight operation, the Detective Branch of police conducted a raid at the Vatara residence of Additional DIG Abdullah Al Zahir in the capital, detaining 85 individuals. While law enforcement initially touted the operation as an anti-narcotics crackdown, the meager seizure of only four bottles of alcohol and a single yaba pill has sparked widespread astonishment and skepticism among police officials themselves, given the large gathering.
Addressing the media, Deputy Commissioner of Police Elias Kabir explained that the detained individuals had reportedly consumed the majority of their narcotics prior to the law enforcers' arrival. In the wake of this embarrassing incident, Additional DIG Abdullah Al Zahir has been promptly withdrawn from his current position and attached to Police Headquarters, pending a formal departmental probe and legal proceedings.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the residence was allegedly being operated as an unauthorized party venue. Rooms were systematically rented out through various online platforms, facilitating regular gatherings involving substance abuse and illicit activities. Young adults from various backgrounds frequently attended these events, bypassing standard security and societal norms.
Authorities are currently verifying the identities of all 85 detainees, and preparations are underway to file formal charges under the Narcotics Control Act and other relevant statutes. The incident has triggered sharp public criticism and raised serious concerns regarding how a high-ranking law enforcement official could harbor or permit such unlawful activities on residential premises.
Police headquarters indicated that a high-level inquiry committee may be formed to investigate whether a broader syndicate or external influences were operational behind the scenes. Furthermore, internal oversight is being tightened to weed out any complicit personnel within the police force, reinforcing the urgent need for institutional accountability and strict adherence to professional ethics.
