Police in Kotchandpur upazila of Jhenaidah detained a 45-year-old man named Haidar Ali, suspecting him to be a leader of the recently banned Jubo League. However, he was released from custody following the intervention of local Jamaat-e-Islami leaders who produced documents proving his affiliation with their party.
Haidar Ali, son of the late Dalil Uddin from Talsar village under Kushna union, walked out of the Kotchandpur Police Station around 9:00 PM on Wednesday. He had been picked up from his residence by police at approximately 6:00 PM.
Detailing the incident, Kotchandpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mehedi Hasan said that Sub-Inspector (SI) Tobibur Rahman of the Talsar police outpost detained Haidar based on a tip-off from an informant, identifying him as the general secretary of the 4th ward committee of the banned Jubo League. Shortly after, local Jamaat leaders arrived at the station and claimed that Haidar has been an active worker of their party since 2022. They presented documentary evidence, including party subscription (iyanat) receipts and records of his participation in meetings and gatherings.
"After consulting with higher authorities, Haidar Ali was handed over to the Jamaat leaders," OC Mehedi Hasan said, adding that strict action would be taken against the informant who provided the false or misleading tip.
Haidar spent roughly three hours in custody before his release at 9:00 PM. Prominent local leaders, including Kotchandpur Upazila Jamaat Acting Ameer Azizur Rahman and District Jamaat Shura member and Youth Division Secretary Shariful Islam, were present at the police station during his release.
Speaking to the media after securing his release, Kotchandpur Municipality Jamaat Ameer Abdul Kaiyum said, "We went to the police station and informed the OC that Haidar Ali is involved with the Jamaat organization. The OC then asked for supporting documents."
