October 23, 2026, marks the 97th birth anniversary of poet Shamsur Rahman, leading up to his centenary in 2029. Discussing his birth anniversary nearly two decades after his passing is not merely an act of remembering a departed poet; rather, it should be viewed as a literary and intellectual endeavor to comprehend our present reality. At the same time, it raises a crucial question: how prepared are we for the poet's upcoming centenary? In preparation, at least three vital tasks must be undertaken—literary preservation and publication, cultural practice and dissemination, and the protection of his memory. For a poet of Shamsur Rahman's stature, nothing less should suffice.
For effective literary preservation, all of the poet's published and unpublished poems, essays, translations, and letters must be collected to publish a reliable and comprehensive complete works edition. This task must be carried out swiftly, as prompt action allows the poet's family to provide invaluable assistance. Countless masterpieces have been lost to the ravages of time due to a lack of preservation. Moving in step with the modern era, establishing a digital archive is also imperative, ensuring that his work remains easily accessible to new generations of readers. Furthermore, the poet's finest works should be translated into English, if not multiple languages. Such an initiative would pave the way for comparative studies between Shamsur Rahman and major poets from around the world on the international stage.
Beyond preservation, his birth and death anniversaries should be marked with poetry recitation events, seminars, and literary gatherings. The Bangla Academy authorities could also institute a long-term 'Kobi Shamsur Rahman Fellowship,' facilitating regular seminars and symposia. Such institutional efforts would ensure a structured framework for ongoing research into the poet's profound literary contributions.
