Police in Dhaka's Mirpur have arrested three biological brothers over allegations of widespread extortion, controlling the garment jhut (fabric scrap) trade, managing footpaths, and forcibly occupying plots and apartments. The Mirpur Model Police Station conducted a special operation on Thursday to apprehend the suspects.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Md. Mehedi Hasan alias Joy (39), Sanjim Hasan (27), and Md. Amit Hasan (28). According to police, they are the nephews of Mofijur Rahman Mamun, Moshiur Rahman, and Jamilur Rahman alias Jamil—the top-tier kingpins of Mirpur's infamous 'Four Star Group'. Their mother, Nasima Begum, is the elder sister of the three notorious criminals. The development follows an investigative report published recently by Chitra Post under the headline "The Reign of the 'Three Brothers Gang' in Mirpur."
According to a press release issued by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), primary investigations reveal that extortion money collected through Mehedi Hasan alias Joy was regularly funneled to Mamun, Moshiur, and Jamil, who are currently fugitive abroad. Joy faces specific allegations of extortion, controlling the jhut business, grabbing plots and flats, managing footpaths, operating adolescent gangs (teen gangs), and engaging in illegal financial transactions. Additionally, his brother Sanjim Hasan has been accused of operating adolescent gangs and establishing supremacy in the area by leveraging the syndicate's influence.
The DMP press release further stated that interrogation of the arrestees uncovered evidence of regular communication with the fugitive kingpins abroad, with whom they remained in constant contact via mobile phones. An investigation is currently underway regarding a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Mirpur Police Station against the three arrested individuals, which was originally registered on September 30.
