Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has strongly criticized the government, alleging a catastrophic decline in the country's law and order situation following the recent arrest of 84 men and women and the recovery of narcotics from a house owned by Additional Deputy Inspector General (Additional DIG) Abdullah Al Zahir.
In a status update posted on his verified official Facebook page on Tuesday night, the Jamaat chief also highlighted the soaring prices of essential commodities alongside persistent gas and electricity crises. He accused the government of being preoccupied with character assassination of the opposition instead of alleviating public suffering and curbing criminal activities.
Referring to the police raid, the Jamaat Ameer wrote, "The Detective Branch (DB) police have arrested 84 men and women on charges of engaging in immoral activities from a house owned by an Additional DIG serving in the Bangladesh Police. At the same time, a massive quantity of banned goods (narcotics) was recovered from the residence."
He further noted that this incident exemplifies the alarming deterioration of the national security apparatus. He claimed that across the country, unlawful and antisocial activities, coupled with rampant extortion, snatching, looting, and armed robberies, have reached alarming proportions.
Expressing deep concern over the involvement of a high-ranking law enforcement official's property, Shafiqur Rahman wrote, "The occurrence of such misdeeds inside a house owned by a senior police official himself has generated widespread anxiety and panic among the public." Concluding his post with a historical lament, he called upon the youth to awaken, writing, "Oh Seleucus! This Bangladesh of ours! The youth must rise once again."
Demand for Departmental Investigation
Meanwhile, in a separate statement, the central publicity and media department secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami, Ehsanul Mahbub Zubayer, condemned and protested the incident. He demanded a thorough and impartial investigation into the matter, exemplary punishment for those responsible, and departmental action against the owner of the house, Additional DIG Abdullah Al Zahir.
