Police have arrested two individuals, including a leader of the Juba Dal, in connection with the fatal shooting of 39-year-old Juba Dal leader Shaker Hossain at the Royal Paribahan counter in the Magura municipality's central bus terminal. The arrests were made on Thursday night.
The detainees have been identified as Rony Shikder, 38, and Shamima Tabassum, 31. Rony Shikder is a member of the convening committee of the Dhaka South city unit of Juba Dal. Md. Kamruzzaman, Sub-Inspector of the Magura District Detective Branch (DB) and the investigation officer of the case, confirmed the arrests.
According to police sources, Rony Shikder was detained from his residence in the Tatipara area of Magura town at around 12:30 AM. Half an hour later, Shamima Tabassum was detained from her home in the Buzurg Srikriti area of the Sadar upazila. On Thursday afternoon, the two were shown arrested as suspects in the Shaker Hossain murder case and sent to jail through the court.
Police reports submitted to the court stated that further investigation is required regarding the specific roles of the arrestees, based on information and evidence gathered concerning their involvement in the murder. Investigations are ongoing to unravel the mystery behind the killing, identify other accomplices, and recover the weapons and vehicles used in the crime.
However, Rony Shikder's elder brother, Rajib Shikder, told Chitra Post, "The deceased Shaker Hossain shared a long-standing friendly relationship with me and my younger brother Rony. If my brother is involved in this incident, I also demand justice for him. But he has been arrested without any credible evidence or proven connection. We believe he has fallen victim to political vendetta."
