Local law enforcement in India's Telangana state has successfully apprehended a young couple in connection with a brazen daylight gold chain snatching incident in Hyderabad. The accused individuals, who hail from the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh, reportedly targeted an elderly temple worker to raise funds for their upcoming wedding. The swift police action underscores the effectiveness of using surveillance technology to track down suspects in urban areas.
The incident took place on the morning of October 18 at the Raja Rajeswari Temple located in the Venkata Ramana Colony under the Vanasthalipuram police station limits in Malkajgiri, Hyderabad. The victim, a 65-year-old temple cleaner named Andugula Rumulamma, was busy maintaining the premises when the suspects approached her. Taking advantage of the empty temple grounds, the young pair initially pretended to offer assistance before suddenly overpowering the elderly woman, physically restraining her, and forcefully snatching her gold chain weighing approximately 30 grams.
Following the formal complaint lodged by the distressed victim, the local police launched a comprehensive investigation. Investigators meticulously examined closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the surrounding neighborhoods to map out the escape route and movements of the culprits. By tracking the suspects' activities through various electronic leads, law enforcement teams closed in on the perpetrators. Three days after the incident, on Wednesday morning, the couple was cornered and arrested near a jewelry store in Vanasthalipuram's Kamala Nagar area.
During subsequent police interrogations, the suspects confessed to the crime, shedding light on their desperate motives. The male suspect has been identified as 23-year-old Annapu Reddy Durga Ramna Reddy, while his partner is 24-year-old Tenka Baralakshmi. Authorities revealed that the couple had arrived in Hyderabad roughly a month prior in search of employment. However, failing to secure stable jobs, they found themselves facing severe financial distress. In a bid to finance their desired marriage ceremony, they ultimately resorted to criminal activities.
Detailing the execution of the crime, police explained that Baralakshmi physically pinned and muffled the elderly victim, while Ramna Reddy wrenched the gold chain from her neck. Following the robbery, the duo swiftly fled the scene on a two-wheeler scooter. Police have recovered pertinent evidence and presented the accused before the judiciary for further legal proceedings. The bizarre case has sparked widespread discussion regarding economic pressures and youth deviance in urban centers.
