A tense and apprehensive atmosphere persists in the popular tourism hub of Sajek under Baghaichhari upazila of Rangamati, following a road blockade enforced by two local organizations. The restrictions were called in the wake of recent armed clashes and gunfights between security forces and local armed groups, plunging the entire region into a state of uncertainty and halting normal daily life.
Visiting the Baghaichhari area on Friday morning revealed a stark departure from the usual bustling activity. The vibrant Baghaichhari Bazaar, typically crowded with buyers and sellers, wore an almost deserted look. While a few shops remained partially open, there were virtually no customers. Residents who needed to venture outside were seen walking long distances to reach their destinations as all local transport services remained completely suspended along the Sajek route, causing immense hardship to commuters.
Transport officials at the Baghaichhari station noted that picketers had taken positions at various strategic points along the road, prompting transport workers to halt operations to avoid security risks. Motijoy Tripura, joint general secretary of the Sajek Resort and Cottage Owners Association, confirmed that the valley is currently entirely devoid of tourists. All prior bookings have been cancelled, and no new visitors are arriving, dealing a severe blow to the local hospitality and tourism economy which relies heavily on weekend travelers.
The ongoing blockade has been organized under the banner of the Sajek Gonodhikar Roksha Committee and the Sajek Karbari Association. Bijoy Kanti Chakma, member secretary of the rights committee, stated that picketing is actively underway in areas such as the 10th and 14th-kilometer markers. Meanwhile, security forces have increased their patrolling and presence across the vulnerable stretches of the road to maintain law and order, though residents remain gripped by fear.
Local business owners and tourism stakeholders have expressed deep concern over the recurring disruptions in the region, noting that regional conflicts severely damage the local economy and livelihood. Authorities are facing mounting pressure to restore order, ensure the safe transit of any stranded visitors, and foster a stable environment that can encourage the resumption of normal tourism and daily commerce in the remote hill tracts.
