The city of Kolkata has begun to reclaim its festive spirit on Maha Ashtami, just days after a devastating stampede at the Chorbagan Sarbajonin Puja Pandal in North Kolkata claimed 19 lives, including children. The tragedy had initially brought the vibrant Durga Puja celebrations to a standstill, shrouding the cultural capital in deep mourning. However, paying solemn tribute to the victims, residents gradually returned to the pandals on Monday to partake in the sacred rituals of Ashtami, including Anjali and Kumari Puja, albeit under a heavy cloud of sorrow and heightened security.
Despite the return of devotees to the ritualistic festivities, the political landscape of West Bengal remains intensely volatile over the tragedy. Opposition parties have launched scathing attacks on the state administration, accusing the government of gross negligence and failure in crowd management. The incident has triggered a fierce war of words, with political factions trading blame over who bears the ultimate responsibility for the safety lapses that led to the catastrophe during one of the state's most revered festivals.
Senior Congress leader Adhir Chowdhury expressed deep outrage, stating that the fatalities could easily have been avoided with proactive governance and proper administrative oversight. Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress leader and legislator Kunal Ghosh countered by accusing opposition figures of staging political dramas over human tragedy, questioning why authorities should not hold the puja committee leadership fully accountable for the breakdown in safety protocols. Amidst the political crossfire, law enforcement agencies have taken decisive action, arresting seven individuals, including the puja committee chairman and opposition-affiliated figure Bijoy Ojha.
Eyewitness accounts have shed light on the immediate catalyst for the stampede, pointing to a frantic public announcement made over the pandal's loudspeakers just as rain began to pour. The announcement warned attendees that the structure was compromised and urged everyone to evacuate immediately, sparking widespread panic and a lethal rush towards the exits. Survivors and witnesses lamented the glaring absence of adequate police personnel and trained volunteers at the critical moment, which could have otherwise managed the surging crowd and prevented the tragic loss of lives.
In the wake of this unprecedented disaster, the state administration and Kolkata Police have instituted rigorous safety protocols across all major puja venues in the metropolis. Additional security forces have been deployed, and strict crowd-flow management systems, including separate entry and exit channels, have been enforced. Puja committees are working in tandem with municipal authorities to bolster volunteer presence, ensuring that the remainder of the festival proceeds safely and that devotees can offer their prayers without fear of recurrence.
