In a brutal incident, a 50-year-old former NGO worker named Fakhrul Alam alias Ratan was hacked to death by miscreants right outside his residence in Kaunia upazila of Rangpur district on Monday afternoon. The sudden and violent attack has sent shockwaves and grief throughout the local community, raising serious concerns regarding local security and law enforcement.
According to local sources, the victim was heading out from his home in Haricharan Laskhar village under Balapara union during the afternoon hours. Unbeknownst to him, a group of assailants had been lying in wait. As soon as he stepped out, the perpetrators surrounded him and inflicted multiple indiscriminate chops with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured before fleeing the scene.
Upon hearing his desperate cries, neighbours and local residents rushed to the spot to find him lying in a pool of blood. They promptly arranged transport to take him to the Kaunia Upazila Health Complex. However, upon arrival at the emergency department, the on-duty medical officer examined him and declared him dead, noting that he likely succumbed to severe blood loss from multiple sharp force injuries.
Following the incident, local police forces arrived at the scene to secure the area and recover the body for autopsy. Investigators and family members noted that Fakhrul Alam had previously worked for an NGO but had left his job to manage domestic land affairs. Police have preliminarily suggested that the murder might stem from previous enmity, business disputes, or local land conflicts.
Badal Kumar Mondal, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Kaunia Police Station, stated that law enforcement is actively working to unravel the mystery behind the murder and identify the culprits. Police are gathering evidence, recording statements from witnesses and relatives, and conducting raids to apprehend those responsible for the heinous crime as swiftly as possible.
