The northeastern Indian state of Manipur has once again been gripped by a fresh wave of violence, plunging the region into a state of severe tension. Late Monday night, two separate violent incidents claimed the lives of at least four individuals, triggering widespread outrage and paralyzing normal life in the capital city of Imphal.
The first incident unfolded in an area inhabited by the Meitei and Pangal Muslim communities. During a local musical event, sudden clashes erupted, escalating into stone-pelting and gunfire. Several people sustained injuries, and a 24-year-old young man later succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at a hospital. This initial fatality acted as a catalyst, intensifying local grievances and fears.
The second deadly incident occurred in the Khamenkol area of Imphal East district. According to local reports and police sources, a group of villagers who had gone to the nearby hills to collect firewood came under sudden gunfire. Suspected tribal extremists carried out the ambush, resulting in the instantaneous death of three villagers, while three others sustained critical injuries.
Furious over the unabated bloodshed, angry residents took to the streets, carrying the bodies of the victims directly to the heavily fortified official residence of the Chief Minister in Imphal to stage a vociferous protest. Law enforcement agencies resorted to baton charges and tear gas shelling to disperse the agitated crowds and restore a semblance of order in the capital.
In response to the crisis, Chief Minister Eumnam Khemchand Singh visited the Raj Medicity Hospital to check on the condition of the injured victims receiving treatment. Local legislator Thokchom Lokendra Singh strongly condemned the brutal attacks and called for immediate punitive action against the perpetrators. Security has been significantly beefed up across the volatile region to prevent further escalation.
