Two separate murders within a span of just 15 hours have shaken Khulna city. On Thursday morning, miscreants shot and killed a young man in the city's East Baniakhamar area. Later in the evening, a housewife fell victim to a fatal shooting in the Jinnahpara area. According to police, both killings may be linked to ongoing disputes over the narcotics trade.
The second incident occurred at around 7:45 PM at the mouth of Lane No. 7 in the Boubazar area of Jinnahpara, where 25-year-old Khushi was shot dead. She was the daughter of Khokon Sheikh and the wife of Suman Sardar, both residents of the same area.
According to locals and police sources, Khushi left her home after sunset and was heading east. Just a few meters from her house, two assailants who had been lying in wait opened fire on her. A bullet struck her in the head, and the attackers immediately fled the scene on a motorcycle. Local residents rescued Khushi and rushed her to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty physicians declared her dead.
Syed Mosharraf Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Labanchara Police Station, told Chitra Post that it remains unclear whether Khushi stepped out alone or was accompanied by someone. However, the two assailants shot her close to her residence before escaping. Her body has been sent to the morgue for an autopsy.
Statistics reveal a worrying trend in the city, with 33 murders recorded in the Khulna metropolitan area over the nine-month period from January to September. Police claim to have cracked 31 of these cases so far. Intelligence reports indicate that at least 10 top criminal syndicates remain active across Khulna city.
