Former Education Minister and prominent political figure Dipu Moni has been sent to jail following a two-day police remand in connection with a murder case filed over the death of a rickshaw puller during the July-August student protests in the capital's Badda area. Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan of Dhaka issued the order on Friday after the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) produced her before the court upon completion of her remand period.
According to court and police sources, CID's Dhaka Metro North inspector Riduazul Haque, the investigating officer of the case, appealed to keep her confined in jail until the completion of the investigation. The prosecution department confirmed the development, noting that the court had earlier granted a two-day remand for her interrogation following a formal application by the investigation team. She was taken into custody for questioning on Wednesday and subsequently presented before the magistrate on Friday.
The case stems from an incident on July 20, 2024, when auto-rickshaw puller Hafizul Sikdar, 28, was waiting for passengers near the Progoti Sarani area in Badda. During the clashes surrounding the anti-discrimination student movement, he was fatally shot as security forces and ruling party affiliates allegedly tried to suppress the protests. Following the tragedy, the victim's father, Md. Abubakar Sikdar, filed a murder case at the Badda police station on August 21, naming former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina alongside 179 other individuals and several hundred unnamed suspects.
The arrest and remand of former high-ranking government officials mark a significant phase in the legal proceedings following the political upheaval in Bangladesh. Investigators are examining the extent of involvement and directives issued by senior leaders during the crackdown on the mass uprising. Families of victims have consistently demanded transparent judicial procedures and strict accountability for those responsible for the deaths during the movement.
As the legal proceedings continue, law enforcement agencies have stated that efforts to track down other absconding accused individuals are ongoing. The investigation remains a high-profile matter closely monitored by legal experts and the public, with expectations that the judicial system will ensure justice for the victims of the uprising. Dipu Moni will remain behind bars as the probe progresses towards eventual formal charges and trial.
