More than eight months have elapsed since the official X account of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman was allegedly compromised in a cyber-attack. The Cyber and Special Crime (South) unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch (DB) has been spearheading the investigation to uncover the masterminds behind the breach. As part of the ongoing legal and technical procedures, investigators have dispatched multiple letters to the complainant's representatives, seeking the mobile phone and other relevant digital hardware utilized by the Jamaat chief for forensic examination. Although the court has formally granted permission to seize and analyze these electronic devices, they are yet to be handed over to the law enforcement agencies.
According to investigating officials, a comprehensive forensic examination of the digital hardware is indispensable for decoding the technical aspects of the breach. Such analysis is crucial to determining the exact timeline, geographical origin, and sophisticated digital intrusion methods employed by the perpetrators. Furthermore, extracting session data, login history, and checking for malware or phishing vectors remain hampered in the absence of the physical devices. Investigators note that these technical gaps prevent them from reaching definitive conclusions regarding how the security protocols were bypassed.
Addressing the delay, Md Sirajul Islam, the complainant representing the Jamaat ameer, clarified that there is no intention to withhold cooperation from the investigating authorities. However, he underscored valid apprehensions surrounding digital privacy and device security. The matter has reportedly been deliberated with DB officials twice, with the complainant's side suggesting that the forensic analysis could ideally be conducted under their observation to ensure data confidentiality and hardware safety.
The issuance of official notices under judicial purview highlights the delicate balance between robust criminal investigation and the protection of sensitive personal data in high-profile cyber cases. Security experts point out that safeguarding the social media handles of prominent political figures is paramount in preventing the dissemination of disinformation or malicious propaganda. As the investigation continues, both law enforcement and the concerned political faction are working toward a mutually agreeable framework that satisfies the evidentiary requirements of the probe while addressing legitimate security protocols.
