The central office of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) in Dhaka's Purana Paltan area was besieged, and its activists were reportedly assaulted on Monday night. The tensions erupted following a procession organised in protest against the prevention of female Baul singers from performing in Sunamganj. The incident has drawn significant attention from political observers regarding the state of political tolerance and freedom of expression in the capital.
The sequence of events began after the release of Dipak Shil, a former president of the Bangladesh Chhatra Union. Shil had earlier been detained by law enforcement while attempting to stage a human chain in the Dhanmondi area, which was organized to protest the harassment and disruption faced by female Baul singers in Sunamganj. Following his release, CPB activists and supporters gathered in front of their central office in Purana Paltan to take out a procession accompanying Shil.
According to CPB leaders, the procession marched towards the Paltan intersection, where a brief rally was being conducted. During the rally, participants chanted slogans including 'Joy Bangla, Joy Samajtantra (Socialism)'. At this juncture, a group of 40 to 50 individuals, who reportedly identified themselves as members of the Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal—the youth and student wings of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)—raised objections to the slogans. The altercation quickly escalated into physical violence.
Attackers reportedly assaulted two CPB activists and marched toward the party’s central headquarters in Purana Paltan. They remained stationed outside the building for approximately one hour, chanting slogans and creating a hostile environment. Police personnel arrived at the scene around 11:30 pm, managing to defuse the immediate tension and secure the premises. Law enforcement officials maintained a heavy deployment outside the party office late into the night to prevent any further escalation.
CPB leadership strongly condemned the attack, demanding the immediate identification and apprehension of those responsible. They termed the incident an assault on democratic rights and political coexistence. Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies have initiated an inquiry into the incident, reviewing local security camera footage to identify the perpetrators and restore complete order in the commercial hub of the capital.
