As part of the grand master plan to alleviate traffic congestion and establish a modern public transport network in Dhaka, construction contracts for four key packages of Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line-1 and MRT Line-5 have been officially signed. Top officials from the country's transport and communication sectors attended the signing ceremony, which marks a significant milestone in expanding the capital's metro rail grid.
MRT Line-1 is set to be the country's first underground and elevated metro hybrid system, connecting routes from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to Kamalapur and from Purbachal to Notun Bazar. Meanwhile, the northern route of MRT Line-5 will seamlessly connect Hemayetpur to Gabtoli, Mirpur, and Gulshan, drastically improving cross-city connectivity. Once operational, these two lines are expected to drastically reduce traffic gridlock and save daily commuting hours for millions of city dwellers.
Speaking at the signing event, project directors and engineers emphasized that contractors have been instructed to strictly adhere to timelines while maintaining international quality and eco-friendly construction standards. Special traffic management plans and alternative routes have also been formulated to minimize public inconvenience during the construction phase.
Urban planning experts note that expanding the MRT infrastructure is vital to accommodate Dhaka's soaring population and ensure a sustainable transport ecosystem. Following the immense popularity and operational success of MRT Line-1's predecessor, the implementation of these four new packages reinforces the government's commitment to building a comprehensive, multi-modal metro network by 2030.
Executing these projects involves complex technical challenges, including land acquisition, utility relocation, and subterranean tunneling. However, authorities remain confident that the construction will progress smoothly, bringing the capital one step closer to a futuristic, world-class commuting experience.
