State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir has stated that the execution of two Bangladeshi nationals in Saudi Arabia following criminal allegations is a matter of deep disappointment and regret for Bangladesh. Speaking to journalists at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday afternoon, the state minister acknowledged that there were noticeable lapses and communication gaps regarding the sharing of information between the two nations prior to the executions.
Highlighting the bilateral ties, Humaiun Kobir noted that Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia share a strong and cordial relationship, particularly at the highest levels of government, and both nations are signatories to major international treaties including the Geneva Conventions. However, he emphasized that the breakdown in timely communication regarding this specific incident warrants a thorough review. Consequently, the government has officially sought a detailed explanation and comprehensive information from the Saudi authorities to understand why these procedural and informational gaps occurred.
Expressing profound concern over the nature of the offenses and the subsequent execution, the state minister remarked that traveling to the holy sites with pure intentions is sacred, and incidents of this magnitude are extremely unfortunate. He reiterated that while Saudi Arabia enforces its domestic penal code, the lack of seamless diplomatic communication and advance notification creates significant concerns for the home country regarding the due process afforded to its citizens.
The foreign ministry is closely monitoring the situation and awaiting a formal response from Riyadh to determine the next course of diplomatic action. Ensuring the welfare, legal rights, and protection of millions of Bangladeshi expatriates working across the Middle East remains a top priority for the government, and efforts are underway to strengthen bilateral consular mechanisms to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
