Police have successfully apprehended Anna Khatun, the primary suspect in a brutal assault case involving a woman in Jhenaidah. The arrest was made on Saturday afternoon in the Harinakundu area following an intensive manhunt. The incident, which involved the victim's hair being forcibly cut and chili powder being applied to her body, has caused widespread public outcry and condemnation across the region.
According to the official statement from the Jhenaidah District Police, the incident occurred last Thursday afternoon in a village within the Jhenaidah Sadar Upazila. The victim, a woman from a minority community, was attacked in her own home by Anna Khatun, her two daughters, and her son, with the alleged assistance of an individual named Abdur Rashid. The attackers reportedly accused the victim of having an extramarital affair with a local man named Anwar Hossain.
Investigations reveal that the motive behind the attack was rooted in a combination of personal vendetta and a misunderstanding regarding property development. The victim’s family, who are financially disadvantaged, were building a brick house after selling a piece of land. The suspects wrongly assumed that the funds for the construction were provided by Anwar Hossain, leading to the premeditated assault. The victim’s husband works as an easy-bike driver, and their son is a barber, highlighting the family's humble background.
Following the attack, the victim filed a formal complaint naming five individuals, including Anna Khatun, as the primary perpetrators. The suspects had initially gone into hiding to evade arrest. The police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that they are actively pursuing the remaining suspects involved in the crime.
This incident has sparked significant debate regarding the safety of women and the prevalence of vigilante justice in rural areas. Local authorities have assured the public that the case is being treated with the utmost priority. Police patrols have been increased in the area to ensure the security of the victim and her family, as the legal process moves forward to ensure justice is served.
