Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has strongly hinted at launching fresh military strikes against Iran, asserting that both he and US President Donald Trump remain steadfastly committed to bringing down the Iranian regime. According to Netanyahu, new initiatives regarding the removal of the government in Tehran were a central focus of his discussions with Trump last Sunday.
Tensions between the nations escalated significantly after the United States and Israel launched coordinated attacks on Iran on February 28. In retaliation, Tehran struck targets within Israel and launched assaults on US military bases stationed across various Middle Eastern countries. The ongoing conflict also prompted Iran to effectively close the strategic Strait of Hormuz, triggering widespread volatility in global energy markets. Although nine months have passed since the hostilities began, the war has yet to be formally concluded, and Netanyahu's latest remarks point toward a potential expansion of the conflict.
In a formal statement, the Israeli premier highlighted his recent dialogue with President Trump regarding collaborative strategies to overthrow the Iranian leadership. "We are committed to bringing down the Iranian government," Netanyahu stated, adding, "I have discussed this matter with US President Donald Trump numerous times, including yesterday."
Amid these developments, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made an unannounced visit to Israel on Monday to confer with Netanyahu specifically on the escalating Iranian threat. Israeli Prime Minister's Spokesperson Doron Spillman confirmed that the high-level meeting took place at the Ovda Airbase in the Negev Desert region. Spillman told Reuters that Netanyahu and Hegseth deliberated on deepening the US-Israel strategic partnership, focusing on both offensive and defensive postures to address regional security challenges. However, the Pentagon has remained largely tight-lipped regarding the specifics of Hegseth's secretive visit.
