The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has officially summoned the comprehensive bank account details and financial transaction records of Mosharraf Hossain, a joint director in the central bank's Anti-Money Laundering Department, alongside his wife Umme Hasan Dolly. Financial institutions, commercial banks, and mobile financial service (MFS) providers across the country received directives to submit account opening forms, complete transaction histories, and details of shares or savings certificates belonging to the couple within two working days, invoking the provisions of the Money Laundering Prevention Act.
This drastic investigative move stems from a series of serious allegations regarding professional misconduct, policy breaches, and the abuse of official authority leveled against Mosharraf Hossain within the central bank. According to internal central bank sources, two major incidents involving him are currently undergoing high-level administrative probes. The first incident dates back to February 26, coinciding with the induction day of the newly appointed governor. On that day, a group of officials led by Mosharraf allegedly pressured and coerced Deputy Governor Kabir Ahmed, who was in charge of the human resources department, and Executive Director Sirajul Islam into signing certain official orders against their will, triggering immediate internal probes.
The second allegation pertains to improper political lobbying and undue influence. Reports indicate that Mosharraf approached a senior executive director of the central bank, using the reference of a central leader of the BNP, to lobby against any punitive actions or financial investigations by the BFIU targeting controversial Awami League leader and former Premier Bank chairman Dr. H.B.M. Iqbal. Following this breach of protocol, the BFIU lodged a formal written complaint against Mosharraf with the central bank's human resources department, casting a shadow of doubt over the internal compliance mechanisms of the supreme financial regulatory body.
Financial analysts and governance experts note that an investigation and account freeze order targeting a high-ranking official within the anti-money laundering division severely damages the institutional reputation and credibility of the central bank. When individuals tasked with upholding financial integrity and combating illicit fund flows become embroiled in power abuses and partisan lobbying, it undermines public trust in the country's entire regulatory framework. The BFIU's decisive action, however, signals a zero-tolerance approach toward internal irregularities, regardless of the perpetrator's official standing.
As the investigation progresses, the scrutinized bank statements and financial disclosures are expected to reveal further insights into the couple's asset accumulation patterns and potential suspicious transactions. If the ongoing inquiries substantiate the allegations, Mosharraf Hossain could face severe departmental disciplinary actions as well as criminal prosecution under stringent anti-money laundering statutes. Stakeholders across the banking sector have emphasized the necessity of thorough accountability to restore absolute transparency and institutional discipline within Bangladesh Bank.
