Bangladesh has demonstrated a resilient performance in the European Union's denim market, with exports surging by 12.71 percent year-on-year in August 2026. According to data from Eurostat, the value of denim shipments to the EU reached 134.08 million euros in August, up from 118.96 million euros during the same period last year. This growth rate notably outpaced the overall EU import market, which saw an 11.23 percent increase to 430.16 million euros. Consequently, Bangladesh's market share in the EU rose to 31.2 percent, compared to 30.8 percent a year earlier.
Despite the strong performance in August, the cumulative data for the first eight months of the year presents a more complex picture. From January to August, Bangladesh's total denim shipments to the EU fell by 5.85 percent, totaling 869.13 million euros compared to 923.11 million euros in the previous year. This decline was slightly sharper than the overall market contraction of 4.40 percent. As a result, Bangladesh's eight-month market share dipped to 29.40 percent from 29.9 percent. Nevertheless, Bangladesh maintains its position as the largest denim supplier to the EU, holding a significant lead of approximately 344 million euros over its closest competitor, Pakistan.
Pakistan, the second-largest supplier, experienced a 14.99 percent growth in August exports to 87.71 million euros. However, its year-to-date performance also reflects the broader market downturn, with an 8-month decline of 7.88 percent to 525.49 million euros, capturing a 17.78 percent market share. Turkey, the third-largest supplier, faced the most significant challenges, with its August exports dropping by 13.26 percent to 58.84 million euros and an eight-month decline of 21.08 percent to 438.25 million euros.
Other key suppliers, including Tunisia, Cambodia, and Morocco, also reported declines in their eight-month export figures. Tunisia saw a 6.44 percent drop, while Cambodia and Morocco faced declines of 6.47 percent and 14.48 percent, respectively. Despite the fluctuations in the global supply chain and the challenges faced by competing nations, Bangladesh's ability to rebound in August highlights the continued competitiveness and demand for its denim products within the European market.
