📌Key Highlights & Summary:
  • •Taxpayers have until 31 December to file income tax returns without penalties.
  • •Online tax return submission has been made mandatory for all taxpayers this year.
  • •Failing to file returns can lead to strict penalties including utility disconnections.

Taxpayers across the country have a crucial two-month window remaining to submit their annual income tax returns without facing financial penalties. According to the latest directives, individuals can successfully file their returns and clear their applicable tax liabilities without any additional charges until 31 December. Those who delay the process and attempt to file their returns from 1 January onwards will be subjected to strict penalties and administrative complications under the existing tax laws.

In a significant shift this year, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) has made online tax return submission strictly mandatory for all categories of taxpayers. The upgraded digital infrastructure is designed to calculate applicable taxes automatically. Consequently, if taxpayers attempt to submit returns starting 1 January by paying only the manually assessed tax, the NBR's automated system will automatically reject the submission. Bangladesh currently boasts over 12.5 million Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) holders, yet historically only around five million individuals file their returns annually.

To encourage early compliance, the authorities previously introduced targeted incentives. Taxpayers who successfully filed their returns during the first quarter of the current financial year, spanning from July to September, were eligible for a tax relief equivalent to 5 per cent of the paid tax or Tk 25,000, whichever was lower. However, this financial relief was exclusively applicable to taxes paid at the exact time of filing during that specific window. Individuals filing during the ongoing second quarter, covering October through December, will not receive any additional tax incentives and must simply pay their standard liabilities.

Those who postpone their filings to the subsequent January-March quarter will encounter severe legal repercussions, including potential utility disconnections such as gas and electricity services, as part of the stringent penalties for default. The transition to a fully digitized platform aims to streamline revenue collection and curb tax evasion, establishing a more transparent financial ecosystem within the country. Authorities strongly advise citizens to avoid last-minute rushes and complete their digital submissions well ahead of the 31 December deadline to ensure compliance and avoid unnecessary punitive actions.
