Bangladesh has initiated renewed diplomatic efforts, calling for a more robust and effective engagement from the United Nations to resolve the protracted Rohingya crisis. Dhaka has emphasized that to achieve a permanent solution to this humanitarian catastrophe, it is essential to maintain sustained international pressure on Myanmar while accelerating the repatriation process. Policymakers at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs believe that without direct UN oversight, ensuring a safe and dignified environment for the Rohingyas in Rakhine State remains nearly impossible.
Since the mass exodus in 2017, triggered by the brutal military crackdown in Myanmar, the Rohingya crisis has become a global concern. Despite multiple attempts to initiate repatriation over the years, efforts have repeatedly stalled due to internal instability in Myanmar and a lack of security guarantees for the returnees. Bangladesh has consistently maintained that a coordinated and firm diplomatic stance from the international community is vital to compel Myanmar to fulfill its obligations.
As part of ongoing consultations with various UN agencies, Bangladesh is now seeking a more proactive role from the UNHCR and other international partners. Dhaka stresses that UN observation and guarantees are crucial for ensuring the citizenship rights, safety, and basic amenities of the Rohingyas upon their return to Rakhine. The current internal conflict within Myanmar has further complicated the situation, making the need for international intervention more urgent than ever.
Bangladesh continues to remind the international community that this is not merely a bilateral issue but a regional and global security concern. The prolonged presence of over a million refugees in camps in Cox's Bazar has placed a significant strain on Bangladesh's economy and resources. The government is now planning to elevate the discourse within the UN Security Council and the General Assembly to ensure the issue remains a top priority on the global agenda.
Furthermore, Bangladesh is maintaining active communication with ASEAN member states to encourage Myanmar to return to the negotiating table. The government has reiterated that voluntary, safe, and dignified repatriation is the only sustainable solution to the crisis. Dhaka has expressed concern that any further delay or passivity from the international community could prolong the suffering of the refugees indefinitely. Consequently, Bangladesh is advocating for a clear, time-bound roadmap led by the UN to bring this humanitarian crisis to a definitive conclusion.
