The government of Bangladesh has initiated a formal diplomatic inquiry following the execution of two Bangladeshi nationals, Nazrul Islam Abdul Basir and Sweety Akter, in the Makkah region of Saudi Arabia. The execution, which took place on October 14, was carried out under the judicial discretion of the Saudi court. In response, the Bangladesh Consulate General in Jeddah submitted a formal diplomatic note to the Makkah branch of the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs on October 19.
Consul General Md. Sakhawat Hossain held a high-level meeting with the Director General of the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Farid bin Saad Al-Sehri, to hand over the inquiry. The diplomatic correspondence contains six specific questions aimed at understanding the legal proceedings that led to the capital punishment. Dhaka is seeking detailed information regarding the nature of the alleged crimes, the timeline of the arrests, and the specific location where the incidents occurred.
Furthermore, the Bangladeshi authorities have requested a certified copy of the court verdict to ensure transparency in the judicial process. A critical part of the inquiry focuses on the method of execution, with the government seeking clarification on whether it was carried out via public beheading or another procedure. The letter also inquires about the current location of the remains and the necessary protocols for repatriation to Bangladesh.
This incident has raised significant concerns regarding the legal protections afforded to migrant workers in the Kingdom. The inquiry also seeks to determine whether the accused individuals had access to legal counsel during their trial, a fundamental right in international judicial standards. The lack of immediate information regarding the legal representation of the deceased has prompted Dhaka to demand a comprehensive account of the trial.
For the Bangladeshi government, this is a matter of protecting its citizens abroad. With millions of Bangladeshis working in Saudi Arabia, the government is under pressure to ensure that its nationals are treated fairly under the local legal system. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently awaiting a formal response from the Saudi authorities, which will dictate the next steps in this diplomatic and legal matter.
As the situation unfolds, the incident serves as a reminder of the complexities surrounding the legal systems in the Middle East and the importance of robust consular support for expatriates. The international community and human rights observers are closely monitoring how the Saudi government responds to these inquiries, as the outcome could influence future diplomatic relations and the handling of similar cases involving foreign nationals.
