In a commendable display of civic responsibility and respect for heritage, youth volunteers in Kishoreganj have undertaken a comprehensive cleaning and preservation drive at a local private library, the 'Old Collection'. The initiative aimed to rescue centuries-old manuscripts, rare books, and historical periodicals from gradual deterioration caused by dust and lack of maintenance.
The volunteer activity took place at the 'Old Collection' library, located near the slaughterhouse culvert in the Harua area of Kishoreganj town. Working diligently from morning until afternoon, the young participants meticulously cleaned accumulated dust from historical books, magazines, and rare handwritten manuscripts. Following the cleaning process, the entire collection was systematically cataloged and arranged on shelves to ensure long-term preservation and easier access for future researchers and history enthusiasts.
The library itself is a treasure trove established through the personal dedication of Sharifuzzaman, a passionate local archivist and history lover. It houses an impressive array of rare literary works, historical newspapers spanning decades, and invaluable handwritten manuscripts dating back nearly 500 years. These artifacts offer profound insights into the socio-cultural evolution, lifestyle, and literary history of the region across multiple centuries.
Expressing his gratitude toward the volunteers, the founder of the collection noted that these aging texts and manuscripts represent the tangible roots of our collective history. Preserving them is essential for bridging the gap between past generations and the youth of today. Community leaders and local intellectuals have hailed this volunteer-driven effort as a significant step toward safeguarding local heritage and inspiring a culture of historical awareness among the younger demographic.
