McLaren driver Lando Norris has issued a formal apology following a collision with his teammate, Oscar Piastri, during the sprint session of the 2026 Singapore Grand Prix. The incident, which occurred at the Marina Bay Circuit, resulted in significant frustration within the McLaren garage and forced Piastri to retire from the race.
The collision took place on the final lap of the sprint race as Norris attempted an aggressive overtake on the inside of turn five. At the time, Piastri was running in fourth place, with Norris in fifth, trailing Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. The maneuver went wrong, causing both cars to spin and collide, ultimately sending Piastri’s car into the barrier and ending his race prematurely. Norris managed to continue but finished in eighth place.
While race stewards opted not to impose any penalties, deeming the incident a racing accident, the McLaren leadership was far from pleased. Team Principal Andrea Stella expressed his disappointment, noting the impact the collision had on the team's overall performance. Norris, acknowledging his error, stated that he should not have attempted the move despite the perceived opportunity, expressing deep regret for letting the team down.
Despite the tension caused by the sprint race incident, both drivers demonstrated resilience during the main Grand Prix held on Sunday. Norris secured a fourth-place finish, while Piastri followed in fifth. The race was won by Max Verstappen, with Charles Leclerc taking second and Andrea Kimi Antonelli finishing third.
In the current Formula 1 standings, Kimi Antonelli leads the championship with 340 points, followed by George Russell, Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, and Charles Leclerc. Norris currently sits in sixth place with 201 points, while Piastri holds 138 points. The incident serves as a critical moment for McLaren as they look to refine their internal racing protocols for the remainder of the season.
