The Bangladesh national football team has suffered a significant setback ahead of their upcoming SAFF Championship campaign, as they will miss two key expatriate players, Hamza Chowdhury and Farhan Ali, in their opening match against Bhutan. While Hamza's absence was previously anticipated, forward Farhan Ali has now been officially ruled out of the tournament opener scheduled for November 5, leaving the coaching staff with a selection puzzle.
According to the national team management, both Hamza and Farhan are expected to join the squad on November 9, following the conclusion of their respective club commitments. Head coach Tom Saintfiet remains optimistic that if everything goes according to plan, the duo will be available for selection in their crucial final group stage fixture against Sri Lanka on November 11. Their eventual inclusion is widely anticipated to bolster both the midfield and attacking departments significantly.
The primary reason behind the delayed arrival of these pivotal players stems from club release protocols and scheduling constraints. Addressing the media, coach Saintfiet explained that clubs are often reluctant to release influential players outside mandatory international windows, as they are not legally bound to do so under specific circumstances. Clubs prioritize their own domestic campaigns and squad depths, which frequently complicates early releases for regional international tournaments.
Complicating matters further, the broader squad preparation has also faced logistical hurdles. Out of the 30-member preliminary squad announced for the SAFF Championship, only 21 players reported to the training camp on the opening day. Several other foreign-based and expatriate players are slated to arrive in Dhaka by November 3, giving the coaching staff barely any time to conduct full-squad training sessions ahead of the tournament opener on November 5.
Despite these early obstacles, the team is leaving no stone unturned to secure a positive campaign. The coaching staff is focusing on tactical adaptability to manage the squad depth effectively during the opening phase. Fans and stakeholders alike are eagerly looking forward to seeing how the national team navigates the initial hurdle against Bhutan before welcoming their star overseas reinforcements for the subsequent matches.
