Two critical security vulnerabilities have been discovered in PHP, the widely used open-source programming language for web development. Cybersecurity firm Hadrian has named these flaws 'PHP2Shell'. Given that approximately 70 percent of websites worldwide, including popular content management systems like WordPress, rely on this language, the discovery has sparked widespread concern across the global digital infrastructure.

Developed originally by Rasmus Lerdorf in 1994 and released in 1995, PHP has served as a foundational server-side scripting language for over three decades. Major global platforms, including Wikipedia and Facebook, have historically utilized PHP to power their backend operations. Because such a massive portion of the internet's architecture depends on it, any vulnerability within its core codebase poses systemic risks to global cybersecurity.

According to the PHP Foundation, the non-profit organization responsible for maintaining the code, the vulnerabilities were found in the memory management and error detection sections of PHP. These components form the backbone of processing any web request. Consequently, malicious actors could potentially manipulate memory data to hijack server controls. Data from the United States National Security Agency (NSA) indicates that these flaws could allow unauthorized direct access to databases and files, exposing highly sensitive information.

The vulnerabilities were detected through a collaborative effort involving artificial intelligence-based code auditing and security researchers. However, sensitive information regarding the flaws leaked online prematurely, prompting the United Kingdom's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) to issue over 50,000 warnings to various organizations. This untimely leak created a critically vulnerable window of 12 to 14 hours before official security patches could be deployed globally.

In light of the severity and potential fallout, cybersecurity agencies worldwide have urged system administrators to immediately apply the latest patches issued by the PHP Foundation. Experts emphasize that securing open-source programming languages like PHP is paramount for maintaining the integrity of the modern internet, as delays in applying updates could expose millions of servers to advanced cyber attacks.
