Industrial unrest has flared up once again in Gazipur as garment factory workers took to the streets to demand their overdue wages and allowances. The sudden blockade on major thoroughfares caused severe traffic congestion on the vital Dhaka-Mymensingh and Dhaka-Tangail highways, leaving hundreds of commuters, office-goers, and long-distance travelers stranded for hours.
According to eyewitnesses and local sources, factory authorities had failed to disburse wages within the stipulated time of the month. Despite repeated verbal assurances, management's failure to clear dues fueled intense frustration among the workforce. Consequently, workers from several factories walked out of their workplaces and occupied the roads, chanting slogans and demanding immediate payment of their arrears.
Upon receiving information, industrial police and local law enforcement units rushed to the spot. They engaged with the protesters to restore order and attempted to persuade them to clear the highways. Authorities also initiated communications with factory owners to expedite the wage disbursement process. Police and district administration officials continue dialogue with worker representatives to normalize traffic movement.
Labor unrest over unpaid wages is a recurring issue in the Gazipur industrial belt, prompting concerns regarding sustainable solutions. Labor leaders point out that management's persistent failure to disburse salaries on time triggers such disruptive protests, which not only deprive workers of their legitimate dues but also disrupt public life and harm the export-oriented manufacturing sector.
Analysts opine that ensuring long-term industrial peace requires stricter oversight by the Ministry of Labor and Employment, along with apex trade bodies like BGMEA. Regular monitoring to guarantee timely payment of wages can effectively prevent such roadblocks and public suffering. Local administration has assured a swift and amicable resolution to the ongoing crisis.
