The blood-stained body of a 50-year-old farmer, with both hands severed, was recovered from a road in Chattogram's Rangunia upazila on Wednesday morning.

The incident took place near the Kalichhari Bridge area in Mirkhal village under Sarapbhata union of the upazila. The deceased was identified as Nezam Uddin, son of Rofu Mia from the Mirakhal Sluice Gate area of Sarapbhata union. Aside from farming, he worked as a local day laborer.

According to local residents and family members, Nezam owned a ripe paddy field near the Matubber House adjacent to the Kalichhari Bridge. On Tuesday afternoon, he left home to guard the field from potential wild elephant attacks. When he did not return by Wednesday morning, his relatives set out to search for him.

Eventually, family members discovered Nezam's blood-stained body lying in the middle of a paved road, about a kilometer and a half away from his paddy field. His severed hands were found lying right beside the body.

Jasim Uddin, the victim's younger brother, said, "My brother was an innocent farmer and day laborer. We cannot understand why or for what reason he was murdered in such a brutal manner."

Md. Helal Uddin Ahmed, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of South Rangunia Police Station, stated that initial inspections suggest miscreants used sharp weapons to sever Nezam Uddin's hands up to the elbows. Investigators believe he died from prolonged bleeding due to the severe amputation, as no other injury marks were found on his body.

The OC added that police are working to identify the culprits and determine the motive behind the killing. The body was recovered at noon and sent to the morgue for an autopsy.
