📌Key Highlights & Summary:
  • •Indefinite blockade in Sajek enters its fourth consecutive day
  • •Sajek remains deserted and tense due to a complete lack of tourists
  • •District administration forms a three-member committee and holds talks to resolve the crisis

The indefinite blockade called by two local organizations in the popular tourist hub of Sajek, located under the Baghaichhari upazila of Rangamati, has entered its fourth day. Traffic movement on the vital Sajek road remained completely suspended since Sunday morning, plunging the picturesque hill destination into an eerie silence due to the total absence of tourists. This tense situation during the peak tourism season has sparked deep concern among local business owners and resort operators.

The blockade has been enforced jointly by the Sajek Gono Odhikar Rokkha Committee and the Sajek Carbari Association, marking their third phase of agitation. Picketers have been active across various strategic points, including the 10th mile, 14th kilo, and Hazachhara areas along the main road. Organizers have reiterated that their protest program will continue indefinitely until their core demands are fully met, defying transportation halts across the region.

The prolonged shutdown has severely crippled the local economy of Sajek, which relies heavily on tourism. According to the resort and cottage owners' association, not a single tourist is currently staying in the area. Consequently, hospitality workers are left idle, and restaurants are devoid of customers, leading to substantial financial losses for local entrepreneurs and threatening the livelihood of numerous families dependent on the tourism sector.

In response to the escalating crisis, the district administration has stepped in by forming a three-member committee aimed at peaceful mediation and resolving the ongoing standoff. A high-level consultation meeting was held on Sunday morning at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner's office, bringing together local headmen and carbaris to deliberate on amicable solutions and restore normalcy to the region.

Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies, including the Sajek police, have maintained a strong and vigilant presence across the hills. Sajek Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tofazzal Hossain reported that no major untoward incidents or acts of violence have been recorded so far during the blockade. Patrols have been significantly stepped up to ensure public safety and keep the situation under strict control.
