The final conversation between Mohammad Yasin and his mother took place late Thursday night. He had promised to return home by morning after delivering a shipment of vegetables to Teknaf. However, fate had a tragic end in store; Yasin did return the next morning, but not as the living son his mother expected, but in a lifeless state. The 18-year-old lost his life in a devastating road accident on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar highway in the Khutakhali area of Chokoria.
The accident occurred around 12:15 AM on Friday when Yasin's pickup truck collided head-on with a bus. The impact was fatal, claiming the lives of Yasin and another individual. The news of his untimely death has cast a pall of gloom over his village. On Friday afternoon, when his body was brought to his maternal grandfather's home in Saharbil, the scene was one of unbearable grief, with his mother inconsolable as she mourned the loss of her young son.
Yasin had long harbored a dream of owning and driving his own pickup truck. Having previously worked as an easy-bike driver, he had pleaded with his parents to help him purchase a pickup. Fulfilling his wish, his parents bought him the vehicle just 15 days ago for 7 lakh taka. For the first ten days, a hired driver operated the truck, but Yasin had only recently begun driving it himself on Wednesday, unaware that it would become the site of his final journey.
Local residents described Yasin as a hardworking and gentle young man whose sudden departure has left his family in a state of shock and despair. The tragedy has once again highlighted the critical issue of road safety on the busy Chattogram-Cox's Bazar highway, where frequent accidents continue to claim precious lives.
As the community mourns, there is a growing demand for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and increased vigilance against reckless driving on this dangerous stretch of road. The loss of a young life full of potential serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need for safer road conditions to prevent such heartbreaking incidents from recurring in the future.
