A tragic road accident in Cumilla has claimed the lives of two individuals, including a local leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The victims died on the spot following a severe collision, leaving the local community and party colleagues in deep shock and mourning.
According to highway police and eyewitnesses, the accident occurred on a busy thoroughfare in the Cumilla district when a passenger vehicle collided head-on with a freight-carrying truck. The impact of the crash was so violent that the vehicle was severely mangled, resulting in immediate fatal injuries for the occupants inside. Local residents rushed to the spot immediately after hearing the loud crash to offer emergency assistance.
Upon receiving the alarm, units from the Highway Police and Fire Service promptly arrived at the scene to carry out rescue operations. Emergency workers extracted the bodies from the wreckage and transferred them to the local general hospital morgue for official procedures and autopsy. As news of the BNP leader's demise spread, party members and relatives gathered at the hospital premises.
The collision briefly disrupted traffic movement along the transportation corridor. However, highway police deployed heavy wreckers to clear the disabled vehicles from the roadway, successfully restoring normal vehicular movement within a short timeframe. Police officials confirmed that a formal investigation has been launched to determine whether driver recklessness or speeding contributed to the crash.
Road accidents in the Cumilla region, particularly along heavily trafficked highways, continue to pose significant public safety challenges often driven by excessive speed and hazardous overtaking maneuvers. Local citizens have reiterated calls for stricter traffic law enforcement and enhanced road safety protocols to prevent recurring tragedies.
