A devastating road accident on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Sitakunda upazila has resulted in the deaths of at least five people, including a woman, and left several others injured. The incident occurred when a speedy passenger bus collided head-on with a heavy lorry, causing massive structural damage to the passenger vehicle and trapping several commuters inside.
According to eyewitnesses and highway police reports, both vehicles were traveling at high speeds when the bus lost control and crashed violently into the oncoming lorry. The impact completely mangled the front portion of the bus. Local residents initially rushed to rescue the trapped passengers before fire service and civil defence units arrived at the scene to carry out extensive extraction operations and rush the injured to nearby hospitals.
The collision caused a severe traffic gridlock along a major stretch of the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, stranding hundreds of commuters for hours. Highway police and traffic management teams worked tirelessly to remove the wreckage from the road and restore normalcy to vehicular movement. Regular commuters and local residents have once again raised serious concerns over the safety of the highway, demanding stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and speed limits.
Transportation analysts point out that reckless driving, disregard for speed limits, and the presence of unfit heavy vehicles on high-speed corridors remain the primary catalysts for such fatal accidents. Despite repeated warnings and safety campaigns, tragic mishaps continue to claim precious lives on this crucial national artery. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to investigating the root causes of the crash and holding negligent parties accountable.
Local administrative officials and senior police personnel visited the accident site to oversee rescue operations and assess the situation. The bodies of the victims have been sent to local hospital morgues for autopsies before being handed over to their respective families. Police have initiated formal legal proceedings in connection with the fatal crash, and investigations are currently underway.
