In a shocking incident in the capital's Mohammadpur area, six individuals, including two intelligence service members and an Ansar force personnel, have been arrested for allegedly abducting a businessman and demanding a ransom of 10 lakh taka. A patrol team of the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station rescued the abducted businessman from Shyamoli late Saturday night during a routine vehicle check. The accused were subsequently handed over to the Mohammadpur police station and later sent to jail by the court.
According to court documents and police sources, the arrested individuals include Sergeant Al Mamun and Lance Corporal Md. Nuruzzaman, both serving in the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), along with Ansar member Md. Sohel Rana, and three others identified as Md. Mukul Gazi, Mahfuzur Rahman, and Md. Ziaul Islam. On Saturday night, a police patrol team intercepted a suspicious vehicle in the Shyamoli area. A person inside the vehicle cried out for help, claiming he had been kidnapped, which prompted the police to detain everyone in the vehicle and uncover the abduction plot.
According to the case statement filed by the victim, one of the accused, Sohel Rana, is a neighbor of the businessman. Taking advantage of a friendly relationship built through prior acquaintance, Sohel reportedly lured the victim to the Chandrima Model Town area on the night of October 24. Once there, the perpetrators surrounded him, forced him into a vehicle, and drove around Mohammadpur while threatening him and demanding a ransom of 10 lakh taka for his release.
Following the rescue, the victim filed a formal case at the Mohammadpur police station. The investigating officer produced all six accused before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Sunday evening, praying that they be confined in jail until trial. After hearing the arguments, Metropolitan Magistrate Ashrafual Haque rejected their bail petitions and ordered them to be sent to prison. The involvement of active-duty security personnel in such heinous crimes has sparked widespread concern and discussion regarding discipline and accountability within law enforcement agencies.
Authorities have assured that a thorough investigation is underway to determine if a larger syndicate is operating behind these abductions and whether other individuals are involved. Civil society members and experts have emphasized the need for strict departmental action and swift judicial proceedings to restore public trust and deter such unlawful activities by individuals entrusted with public safety.
