The Dolonchapa Express, an intercity train, derailed near Badarganj railway station in Rangpur on Saturday evening, causing a significant disruption to rail services on the Parbatipur-Rangpur route. The incident occurred around 6:00 PM as the train was traveling from Santahar to Panchagarh, leaving passengers stranded and sparking immediate unrest.
Following the derailment, the situation escalated quickly as a group of frustrated passengers physically assaulted the train driver, Rafiqul Islam, and the guard, Bazlur Karim (55). According to passengers on board, the train had been making unusual noises since passing Auliaganj station, suggesting a pre-existing mechanical issue that culminated in the derailment near Badarganj.
Badarganj Station Master Imrul Kayes stated that preliminary investigations suggest the presence of bamboo and firewood debris on the tracks might have caused the derailment. In response to the incident, railway authorities have initiated a rescue operation, with a relief train dispatched from Parbatipur to clear the tracks and restore normal operations.
While the passengers managed to find alternative transport to reach their destinations, the assault on railway staff has raised serious concerns regarding safety and security protocols. Railway officials have indicated that a formal investigation will be conducted to determine the exact cause of the derailment and the circumstances surrounding the passenger outburst.
As of late Saturday night, the Parbatipur-Rangpur route remains closed, causing a temporary halt in regional rail connectivity. Authorities are working to clear the wreckage, but normal service is not expected to resume until the track is fully cleared and declared safe for transit. The railway department has urged the public to remain patient while the recovery efforts continue.
