A tragic and unprecedented terrorist attack has shaken the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. On Friday, gunmen stormed a Greek Orthodox church in the Hamoud area of the Karak administrative region, opening fire on mourners attending a funeral service. The assault resulted in the deaths of seven individuals, while at least 34 others sustained injuries, with 27 currently receiving medical treatment in hospitals.
According to survivors, the incident began with a loud, explosive sound just as the funeral procession was getting underway. Armed assailants then entered the church premises and began firing indiscriminately. Witnesses reported that the attackers were armed with both pistols and automatic rifles, turning a solemn religious gathering into a scene of chaos and bloodshed within minutes.
Obaidullah Al-Mayetah, Director of the Public Security Directorate of Jordan, confirmed the casualties during a press conference. He stated that security forces have launched a massive manhunt to track down the perpetrators. He emphasized that the state would not allow such acts to undermine the national unity and security of the country.
Jordanian Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya has officially classified the incident as a 'terrorist attack.' While no group has yet claimed responsibility for the carnage, intelligence agencies are actively investigating the motives and the identities of the attackers. The area surrounding the church has been placed under a strict security cordon to prevent further incidents.
The attack has sent shockwaves across Jordan, prompting calls for calm from both local officials and religious leaders. In response to the tragedy, the government has ordered an immediate increase in security measures at churches and other religious sites across the country. The international community has also condemned the violence, expressing solidarity with the victims and supporting the Jordanian government's efforts to maintain order and stability.
