Tensions have escalated in Pirojpur following the death of freedom fighter Manik Pashari, a key witness in the war crimes trial of former Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delawar Hossain Sayeedi. Pashari passed away on Saturday morning at his daughter's residence in Tungipara, Gopalganj, after a two-month battle with illness. The situation surrounding his burial has become a flashpoint for local unrest.
Following his death, the family brought his remains to the Pirojpur Sadar Upazila complex. Subsequently, the body was taken to the Pirojpur Police Lines, where he was accorded a 'Guard of Honour' in recognition of his contribution as a freedom fighter. However, this official tribute and the subsequent burial plans have faced opposition from certain local factions.
Reports indicate that groups of individuals have protested against burying Pashari within the district, leading to a palpable sense of instability. Simultaneously, activists from Jamaat-e-Islami were observed gathering at various strategic points in the city. To prevent any potential escalation or untoward incidents, law enforcement agencies have maintained a heavy presence, and the body is currently being held under police protection at the Police Lines.
Abdur Razzak, Assistant Secretary of the Pirojpur district unit of Jamaat-e-Islami, stated that his party does not intend to create chaos and has no objection to the burial itself. However, he challenged Pashari's status as a freedom fighter and criticized the decision to grant him a Guard of Honour. He alleged that there might be attempts to frame his party for any potential unrest.
It is worth noting that Delawar Hossain Sayeedi, who was serving a life sentence for crimes against humanity committed during the 1971 Liberation War, died in custody on August 14, 2023. As a witness in that high-profile case, Pashari's role remains a sensitive subject in the local political landscape. Local authorities are currently working to resolve the impasse and ensure that the burial is conducted with the dignity befitting a freedom fighter while maintaining public order.
