Khulna experienced two separate shooting incidents within a single day, raising concerns about local security. On Saturday, a local youth party leader was shot in Terokhada upazila, followed by an evening attack on a grocer in the South Tutpara area of Khulna city. Both victims are currently receiving medical treatment at Khulna Medical College Hospital.
The first incident occurred in the morning in Parhajigram, Terokhada. Ramim Biswas (32), the president of Ward 3 Youth Party in Madhupur Union, was traveling by van toward Kolabazar. Around 11:15 AM, unidentified assailants on a motorcycle approached from behind near Khan Bricks on the Senerbazar-Madhupur road and opened fire, striking him in the back. He was rushed to the hospital for emergency care.
Later that evening, a second shooting took place in the South Tutpara area of the city. Akash Kundu (45), a local grocer, was sitting in his shop when he was shot in the abdomen. Local residents rushed to his aid after hearing his cries and transported him to the hospital. Police recovered shell casings from the scene of the crime.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khulna Sadar Police Station, Lokman Hossain, stated that law enforcement is actively working to identify the perpetrators. Regarding the attack on the grocer, the police suspect that the motive may have been intimidation rather than a direct attempt to kill, with extortion being a primary line of inquiry. Akash Kundu is widely regarded as a peaceful member of the community, making the attack particularly shocking to locals.
These back-to-back incidents have caused significant alarm among the residents of Khulna. Police authorities have launched investigations into both cases, utilizing forensic evidence and surveillance footage to track down the suspects. As of now, investigators are determining whether there is any connection between the two attacks. The local community has demanded swift justice and increased police patrols to ensure public safety.
