The brutal murder of a local student leader in Natore's Gurudaspur upazila has sparked intense political tension and public outrage. Shakil Islam, the member secretary of the Gurudaspur municipal branch of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, was attacked on the night of October 14 and succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. Following the high-profile incident, the son of local Member of Parliament Abdul Aziz was detained and placed on police remand for interrogation. Authorities also withdrew the officer-in-charge of the Gurudaspur police station in an effort to maintain law and order.
The tragic sequence of events began when Shakil was intercepted by unidentified assailants on motorcycles while walking home in the Chachkair area. He sustained critical chop injuries and was initially rushed to a local health complex before being transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital and later to Dhaka for advanced medical care, where he eventually passed away. On October 19, the victim's father, Rabiul Karim, filed a murder case accusing eight to ten unnamed individuals. The aftermath of the incident immediately thrust the internal dynamics and alleged factional disputes involving the MP's family into the spotlight.
Local residents and political activists have alleged that Shakil was active within the faction led by the younger son of MP Abdul Aziz. Speculation has grown that longstanding rifts and turf wars between opposing groups loyal to the MP's sons may have served as a catalyst for the violent attack. Additionally, police sources indicate that preliminary investigations are probing potential motives related to local drug trade dominance and financial disputes. The situation escalated further on Tuesday night when a shopping mall operated by an associate of the MP's son was vandalized by angry locals.
In his defense, MP Abdul Aziz vehemently denied any familial involvement, asserting that Shakil was his loyal worker and that a vested quarter was attempting to frame his family. During the funeral prayers on Tuesday, he publicly stated that he would stand by the victim's family rather than his own son if allegations of involvement are proven. Meanwhile, senior district BNP leaders have demanded an impartial investigation, pointing toward potential external instigation or overseas connections behind the crime.
District Superintendent of Police Mohammad Shariful Haque confirmed that comprehensive investigations are underway to determine whether the murder stems from political friction or personal enmity. Law enforcement agencies are actively pursuing all leads to bring the perpetrators to justice. The community remains on edge as the investigation unfolds, with civil society and political stakeholders closely monitoring the legal proceedings surrounding this deeply sensitive case.
