📌Key Highlights & Summary:
  • •Over 500 government and private sites in Bangladesh are at risk due to newly discovered PHP vulnerabilities.
  • •Researchers from two US-based firms identified the flaws with the help of artificial intelligence.
  • •Concerns grow as many institutions fail to update their software despite prior security warnings.

Concerns regarding digital infrastructure safety in Bangladesh have intensified following the discovery of critical security vulnerabilities in the widely used PHP programming language. According to the government’s specialized cyber security agency, BGD e-Gov CIRT, these vulnerabilities have put more than 500 websites and applications across the country at significant risk. The affected platforms encompass a wide range of both government and private institutions. Reports indicate that despite prior warnings issued by authorities, numerous organizations have continued to run outdated versions of PHP and failed to implement timely security patches.

PHP, which stands for Hypertext Preprocessor, is a fundamental programming language that operates on the backend of web development. According to global technology research reports, roughly 70 percent of all websites worldwide rely on PHP for their core operations. Consequently, any security flaw within this language poses a widespread threat to digital ecosystems globally. The cyber threat intelligence unit in Bangladesh identified these vulnerable sites through continuous monitoring, noting that the list includes financial institutions and vital public service portals alongside private enterprise websites.

The vulnerabilities were initially discovered last week by a team of researchers from two United States-based cyber security firms, Calif and Wiz, leveraging artificial intelligence technologies. Prompted by these findings, the core development team of PHP released an urgent global security update on October 21 to address two severe vulnerabilities. Subsequently, PHP authorities announced the identification of another flaw on October 23. These security loopholes primarily stem from PHP's session management and file upload mechanisms, which could potentially be exploited by malicious actors if left unpatched.

Technology experts emphasize that if government and corporate entities fail to update their digital platforms and server environments to the latest PHP versions promptly, the risk of cyberattacks and data breaches will escalate dramatically. This is particularly alarming for organizations handling financial transactions and sensitive citizen data. In today's interconnected digital landscape, maintaining robust cyber security is a prerequisite for national stability. Experts strongly urge all relevant institutions to audit their backend infrastructure and complete necessary software updates immediately to avert potential cyber threats.
